Trainee Keeper: Primates

Twycross Zoo is at a very exciting stage of development with the first phase of a 20 year masterplan already underway.  The plan will see the zoo developing new habitats for a refreshed animal collection starting with giraffe savannah and gibbon forest in 2015 and plans for ape  developments also going ahead.  We are looking for dynamic, experienced individuals to drive the zoo forward during this redevelopment.

We currently have two vacancies for Trainee Keepers on our Primates section.  The section manages a wide variety of primate species including gibbons, callitrichids, cebids, guenons and lemurs.

Key Responsibilities:
•        Basic animal husbandry and regular interaction with the public

Key Skills & Requirements:
•        Enthusiastic, motivated and with an interest in zoo animal management and education  Commitment to continual professional development
•        A good team worker
•        Zoo keeping experience and a relevant animal-related qualification

This is a full time, permanent position, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform and 31 days holiday per annum.

Curator of Living Collections


Twycross Zoo is at a very exciting stage of development with the first phase of a 20 year masterplan already underway.  The plan will see the zoo developing new habitats for a refreshed animal collection starting with giraffe savannah and gibbon forest in 2015 and plans for ape  developments also going ahead.  We are looking for dynamic, experienced individuals to drive the zoo forward during this redevelopment.

Following internal promotion, a position has become available for a Curator of Living Collections to lead and advance the Animal Department as part of the development of the Life Sciences Directorate. 

The successful candidate will be an experienced animal manager with the vision and energy to be part of the development of a world class animal department in conjunction with the senior Life Sciences team.  

Applicants must have experience of managing a large team, with proven success in setting goals and improving performance.  Budget management experience is also an asset.  We have a diverse animal collection with a bias towards primates, so experience with a broad range of animal species would be advantageous.  A scientific approach to animal management and development of the zoo, combined with professionalism and strong communication skills is essential.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide 31 days holiday.

·       Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a keeper
·       Able to demonstrate a substantial working knowledge of the natural history and management of key species
·       A good team worker with a positive outlook
·       Excellent communication skills
·       Committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff
·       Supervisory experience advantageous
·       An animal related qualification such as ANCMZA or DZMAA

This is a full time position, including weekend duties on a rota system.  Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform and 31 days holiday.

Senior Keeper: Large Mammals

Senior Keeper: Large Mammals

Twycross Zoo is currently going through an exciting period of change as the zoo develops and we are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Keeper on our Large Mammals section.  The section manages a range of ungulate and carnivore species including zebra, nyala, tapir, Amur leopard, snow leopard, meerkat, Kirk’s dik dik, Asian elephant and giraffe, which will arrive in 2015.   

Key Responsibilities
•        A hands-on role, working on the section and covering all areas of daily animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping
•        Interacting with visitors to the zoo
•        Assisting with the supervision and training of staff

Animal Keeper: Large Mammals

Animal Keeper: Large Mammals

Twycross Zoo is currently going through an exciting period of change as the zoo develops and we are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

We currently have a vacancy for a Grade 1 Keeper on our Large Mammals section, which includes a range of ungulates and carnivores including zebra, nyala, tapir, Amur leopards, meerkats and giraffes which will arrive in 2015.    

At this level you will be able to work effectively without supervision and complete work to a competent and high standard.

Key Responsibilities
·       A hands-on role, working on the section and covering all areas of daily animal husbandry
·       Supporting and working closely with the Deputy Section Head
·       Assisting with staff training

Key Skills & Requirements
·       Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience
·       Able to demonstrate good working knowledge of the natural history and management of key species within the section
·       A good team worker with a positive outlook
·       Excellent communication skills
·       Committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff
·       An animal related qualification such as ANCMZA or DZMAA would be advantageous

Deputy Section Head: Elephants

Twycross Zoo is currently going through an exciting period of change as the zoo develops and we are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

The elephants section comprises a herd of 5 Asian elephants, which includes two mother/daughter pairings, ranging in age from 9 months to 28 years old.  A new grass paddock and raised visitor walkway with viewing area was completed this summer to complement the large sand paddock and pool.

Key Responsibilities
·       A hands-on role, working on the section
·       Supervising all areas of daily animal husbandry
·       Developing, supervising and training staff
·       Taking administrative responsibility, alongside other senior staff within the Large Mammals section

Key Skills & Requirements
·       High performing and enthusiastic
·       Proven track record of working with elephants in a protected contact system
·       Good experience of elephant foot care
·       Minimum of 8 years’ experience preferred
·       Able to demonstrate good working knowledge of the natural history and management of elephants
·       Good team worker with positive outlook
·       Excellent communication skills
·       Committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff
·       An animal related qualification such as ANCMZA or DZMAA
